Rica Halm, an amazing woman, died unexpectedly on November 29, 2017, at the age of 87. She was a colorful character full of thoughts, words, “how to advise” and laughter. Rica lived life on her own terms in her own way.

Born in New York City during the Depression, as a child she was hired in the summers to pick vegetables in upstate New York and subsequently spent a few years separated from her mother. Although her youth was fraught with adversity, she loved school, reading and adventures.

As an adult, Rica led an exciting life in New York City, where eclectic friends included artists, directors and actors. Her friends were diverse; she found interest and value in others, and her friendships endured. Rica was a pilot and trainer for small aircraft and shared many flight adventures with her friends. During these years, Rica worked as a government travel agent and tour guide. She traveled and explored many countries where she captured the sites as a gifted photographer. Again, Rica delighted her friends with her adventures and misadventures.

Planning for retirement 30 years ago, Rica bought a large parcel of land in Barryville, NY. She began to spend weekends, vacations and holidays building her home. It was her sanctuary, which included an oak tree growing through her deck and a babbling brook. She lived as a pioneer woman “off the grid” before it was popular. Forced to live without electricity, she devised methods to make her home comfortable, which included cutting and splitting her own wood for winters. Rica was also a staunch environmentalist and lifelong caretaker for her sister.

Rica was a gifted writer of poems and short stories, some of which were published. She was involved in the community, which often included conversational advice and directions! When you met Rica, there was sure to be laughter. She was a town icon.

Rica left us suddenly and unexpectedly with friends at her side. In the great Rica fashion and style, she left us her writings, photos and joyful memories. She was an amazing woman who lived a fascinating life. We have lost a good friend and part of our family. She is missed.
