Replacement of Ten Mile River Bridge begins

TUSTEN, NY — The New York State Department of Transportation announced on May 7 that work has begun on a $2.5 million project to replace the bridge carrying State Route 97 over Ten Mile River in the Town of Tusten.
The new bridge will be approximately eight feet wider than the existing bridge, with larger shoulders to safely accommodate pedestrians and cyclists. The road provides access to popular outdoor recreation areas for fishing, canoeing/kayaking and camping.

“Highways like Route 97 are critically important to the rural communities they serve, providing a main route for residents to travel within their town and connect with other regions,” NY Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul said. “By ensuring direct access for travelers looking to experience the wide range of fun, healthy outdoor activities available, this bridge replacement will help keep Sullivan County thriving.”

Preliminary site work began in the fall of 2018 to construct a two-lane temporary bridge. Construction resumed in February 2019 to complete the temporary bridge, which included installing bridge decking and rail, and performing pavement approach work.

Work this year will involve demolishing the existing bridge and building the new structure at the same location. Signs, guide railing and pavement markings within the project limits will be upgraded.

Consistent with Governor Cuomo’s Drivers First initiative, the projects have been designed to minimize traffic impacts. During construction, traffic will be detoured via the on-site temporary bridge located just north of the existing bridge.

The bridge replacement project is expected to be substantially complete and the new bridge opened to traffic this fall.

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in work zones. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.
