Reaching out to the unaffiliated

WAYNE COUNTY, PA — In some places, particularly in urban and suburban areas, canvassing involves walking door to door. But in a primarily rural area like Wayne County, it means driving and driving and driving, guided by GPS with information about the locations of unaffiliated voters.

One late Monday afternoon in mid-September, two volunteers for the Wayne County Democrats did exactly that along the paved and unpaved byways that go through woods and meadows, past fallow farmlands and sometimes into dark forests.

One never knows what kind of reception there will be at a destination. Will the person who comes to the door be receptive or hostile because of the political position of the canvassers? These two volunteers encountered both.

Here we take you on the road with them and try to capture the sense of hope, but also the tension that comes with representing one party during a very contentious campaign, where there is deep anger on both sides.
