Fun with Callicoon Station, artist opening reception

CALLICOON, NY — On Friday, July 9 an artist reception for Chip Forelli’s photography exhibit, “The Black & White Landscape,” will take place at Rafter’s Tavern from 5 to 7 p.m. After, from 7 to 9 p.m., local band Callicoon Station will play at the Nest, the outdoor stage behind Rafter’s Tavern.

Forelli’s photographic career has spanned over three decades. The exhibit will run through the month of July.

A press release reads, “With dynamic harmonies and crowd-pleasing solos, Callicoon Station performs a variety of new and familiar tunes. This especially diverse band of accomplished musicians includes Brewster Smith (vocals, guitar, percussion), Elizabeth Rose (vocals, guitar, keys), Chip Forelli (vocals, bass) and Don Castellow (baritone sax, bass clarinet, low whistle).”

In inclement weather, performances will take place at the Rafter’s Tavern indoor stage.

‘Picking with Pete, Singing with Seeger’

MONTICELLO, NY — On Thursday, July 15 at 6 p.m., Donna and Rick Nestler will present a musical program on the outdoor stage at the E.B. Crawford Public Library. The songs will be introduced with short stories about playing with Pete Seeger. The audience will be given ample opportunity to join in, singing along, as that was one of Pete’s goals.

The husband-and-wife team of Rick and Donna Nestler have been playing together professionally for over 20 years, performing a variety of different traditional genres including jug band, blues, country and maritime music, falling under the general heading of Americana Roots music. Both are multi-instrumentalists playing six- and 12-string guitars, tenor banjo, ukuleles and concertina, among other things. Rick had a 35-year friendship with Pete Seeger. Donna is a classically trained musician who has toured Europe.

Masks and social distancing are required. Registration is necessary and limited to 50 people.

‘Altar Boyz’ the musical

FORESTBURGH, NY — “Altar Boyz” the musical will be on Forestburgh Playhouse’s main stage from July 13 to 25.

A press release from the playhouse reads, “A foot-stomping, rafter-raising musical comedy about a fictitious Christian boy band on the last night of their national ‘Raise the Praise’ tour. The Boyz are five all-singing, all-dancing heartthrobs from Ohio: Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan and Abraham. With their tight harmonies and spectacular choreography, the Altar Boyz delight their audience. Performing a full set, the Boyz question their loyalty to each other and ask whether or not faith is really holding them together. In the end, they deliver a message of unity: ‘there is no star as bright as its constellation, no harmony in a single voice.’”

All ticket holders will receive guidelines and protocols prior to arrival and will be seated in comfortable, socially distanced locations. COVID vaccination required.

‘Mystical Stitches’

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — The public is invited to a book signing with Christi Johnson, author of “Mystical Stitches,” on Friday, July 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Morgan Outdoors.

A press release reads, “Christi Johnson’s art combines cosmic visions and botanical beauties, stitched slowly and methodically into fabric. She embraces the qualities of natural materials and the use of discarded materials. Christi is the woman behind Mixed Color, a textile studio, based in Sullivan County, NY, that provides
functional pieces that are thoughtfully made, as well as sharing skills in sewing, embroidery, and natural dyeing so that others may do so themselves. Christi dedicated her book to ‘anyone who’s ever been told they aren’t creative, or their art isn’t good enough.’”

‘The River’

BARRYVILLE, NY — “The River” by Noah Kalina, will be on display at Nonneta and Friends Creative, 16 Old Brook Rd.,  through August 1.

Since 2015, Noah Kalina has been photographing the Delaware River 275 feet above his studio with a drone. In 2020, when COVID-19 lockdown began, Kalina made a photograph of the view every day for an entire year. The 43 photographs on display are a selection of photographs taken between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021.

Noah Kalina is a photographer and artist based in Lumberland, NY. Kalina’s work has been widely exhibited nationally and internationally. His ongoing project “Everyday,” is a series of daily self-portraits, has been parodied by “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy.” Everyday has been cited as being one of the main influences behind “selfie” culture. Kalina also works as a commercial photographer and has been commissioned by Google, Disney, Gucci, General Electric and David Webb. Kalina was the primary photographer for the original “Cabin Porn” book and has published two other books, “Bedmounds” and “Tiny Flock.”

The Kartrite Resort reopens for season

MONTICELLO, NY — New York’s biggest indoor waterpark, The Kartrite Resort & Indoor Waterpark, has officially reopened its doors on Thursday, July 1. Nestled in the Sullivan County Catskills, the family-friendly destination resort is now accepting reservations.

‘At the Farm,’ a family event

DAMASCUS, PA — On Saturday, July 10 at 10 a.m., Farm Arts Collective, on Willow Wisp Organic Farm, will host a free farm day workshop for kids and families in collaboration with The Cooperage Project’s “At the Farm” series.

The day includes a warmup with the Cooperage Project, a farm tour of Willow Wisp Organic Farm with Farm Arts Collective perfarmers [sic] Tannis and Jess, some hands in the dirt experience, a vegetable puppet show from the Farm Arts Collective performance, Stone Soup Cooking Class and a takeaway carrot bag.

Power duos weekend at Harmony in the Woods

HAWLEY, PA — The second weekend of performances at Harmony in the Woods features two nationally renowned duos in two vastly different styles stretching from the Appalachian Mountains to the theaters of Broadway: Jay Ungar and Molly Mason will play on Friday, July 9 and Sally Wilfert and Joseph Thalken on Saturday, July 10.

Jay Ungar and Molly Mason are described as “the heart and soul of American Roots music.”

Sally Wilfert and Joseph Thalken will perform a variety of pieces spanning their careers on Tony-Award-winning productions of Broadway shows such as “Assassins,” “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and King David,” as well as in concert halls all over the world.

The outdoor performing arts amphitheater opened its season over July 4th weekend and evening performances will continue throughout the July and August weekends. Harmony in the Woods is a project of The Foundation for Harmony Presents, a charitable 501c3 organization, which seeks to enlighten and engage all in their new venue among the trees, with a lineup that reaches across musical genres and performances styles

Tickets for these Friday and Saturday evening performances are $25 and $35, depending on seats chosen; guests are encouraged to BYOB and snacks from local area restaurants. Guests are also encouraged to bring their own chairs, and a limited amount of chairs will be available to rent on site as well. Both shows begin at 6 p.m. with doors open at 5:30 p.m. Parking is available on site and attendees will be directed on where to park. In case of rain, these two performances will take place at the Hawley United Methodist Church.
