A 50-year civic duty milestone

HONESDALE, PA — Twenty-one Wayne County, PA residents were honored at a Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame induction ceremony held on October 14 in the main courtroom on the third floor of the courthouse. These citizens hold the distinction of voting in a string of 50 continuous November general elections in the county.

The ceremony recognized these citizens for their dedication to the electoral process upon which the United States was founded. Each of the honorees was presented with citations signed by Gov. Tom Wolf and acting Secretary of the Commonwealth Leigh Chapman, as well as citations issued by their representatives in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

These inductees will be added to more than 20,000 names of previous 50-year voters. The list is on display in Harrisburg in the office of the Department of State.

The Wayne County commissioners were on hand to offer their remarks about the importance of these individuals’ commitment. Commissioner Brian Smith emphasized the importance of the accomplishment. “We hear people say, ‘My vote doesn’t count,’ but we all know that we’ve seen votes, particularly here in Wayne County, that can be won or lost in single digits. For you to show up and cast your vote and to make a difference is a great example to every person in the United States that you’re committed to freedom, you’re committed to your right to vote, and that’s important and that’s something that everybody should be committed to.”

Commissioner Joe Adams pointed out that “the commissioners’ race last time was a difference of 10 votes. There’s 11 of you here! It’s amazing that things can be that close, and that tells all of us how important it is for every single person to vote. I think that in Wayne County, we have a civic-duty pride that goes above and beyond many other places.”

Adams also pointed out that the percentage of Wayne County’s approximately 35,000 registered voters that achieve this milestone achievement is one of the highest in the commonwealth.

The 2022 inductees to the Voter Hall of Fame are Lawrence Andracki, Sandra Kline, Robert T. Roche, Linda Barna, Francis J. Monaghan, Myra Mae Schnakenberg, James D. Bridges, Stephen G. Murray, Bonnie S. Schum, Michael. J. Curran, Linus H. Myers, Michael Stephen Slish Jr., Jane E. Farrell, Leona H. Nolan, Marie D. Swartz, David W. French, Donald E. Olsommer, Arlene J. Swingle, Gerald Fulmer, Janet Olsommer and Merel Swingle.
