Sullivan BOCES reminds, February is National Career and Tech Month

LIBERTY, NY — Career and Technical Education (CTE) has a long and rich history in the U.S. CTE Programs have evolved from a limited number of vocational programs into a comprehensive system that encompasses various challenging fields in diverse subject areas, continually evolving due to the changing global economy.

Studies have shown that high school students who attend career and technical training during high school demonstrate higher success levels in post-secondary education and employment.

In Sullivan County, more than 35 percent of high school juniors and seniors attend the Career and Technical Education Center at Sullivan BOCES. Each program includes articulation agreements with two and four-year colleges or trade schools, affording students the opportunity to earn college credit toward an associate or bachelor’s degree.

Sullivan Renaissance paid internships available

LIBERTY, NY — Sullivan Renaissance is recruiting interns for the 2021 season. In partnership with the Center for Workforce Development, Sullivan Renaissance will hire several young adults (ages 16 to 20) to work alongside volunteers to help communities, organizations, churches and schools turn their ideas into a reality. Interns also participate in a series of meetings and a “Day of Service” project. Salaries are competitive, presenting a great opportunity for a paid summer job where you can also dig in and learn new skills.

Monticello BOE seeks two new members for audit committee

MONTICELLO, NY — The Monticello Board of Education (BOE) seeks two community members to join its district audit committee for a three-year term. The volunteer position is open to any district resident with two years of financial experience who has not worked or provided services for the district during the past two years. Individuals who are partners in, controlling owners or executives of for-profit businesses to which the district made, or from which the district received significant payment ($100,000) in any of the past five years, are also ineligible to serve in this position.

The audit committee meets a minimum of four times each year to provide the BOE with independent oversight of the district’s internal and external audit functions. 

Interested candidates should send a letter of interest and a resume outlining their experience and knowledge in internal controls, financial statement audits and management/operational audits to District Clerk Janet Montes email to jmontes@k12mcsd.net by Wednesday, March 31.

Monticello Kiwanis thank public health staff

MONTICELLO, NY — On  February 3, the Monticello Kiwanis Club, in conjunction with Miss Monticello Diner, delivered 25 hot lunches consisting of grilled cheese sandwiches and french fries to  Sullivan County Public Health Nursing Services in Liberty to thank the clinic’s professional staff and volunteers for their ongoing dedication and services to the community. That day, 218 Phase 1B essential workers were vaccinated, including first responders, firefighters, law enforcement workers, teachers and school personnel. Public Health Director Nancy McGraw stated that the meals were truly appreciated by all.

Spectrum to award $5,000 to United Way of Sullivan County 

MONTICELLO, NY — Spectrum announced a donation of $5,000 to the United Way of Sullivan County as part of the company’s national community philanthropic program, Spectrum Employee Community Grants, part of a $1 million programming commitment through year-end 2021.

The funds will be used to target needs in the areas of education, income and health.

Spectrum Employee Community Grants has provided funding to more than 225 local nonprofits in 30 states throughout the company’s service area since its inception in July 2019.

Recipients deliver critical social services, helping underserved residents meet basic needs, including food, shelter, clothing, job training and neighborhood safety. Each awardee is nominated by one of the company’s 96,000 U.S. employees who has volunteered with the organization for at least one year.

Sean LeStrange announces candidacy 

WAYNE COUNTY, PA — Retired Honesdale Police Detective Sergeant Sean LeStrange announced his intention to seek election as magisterial district judge for District 22-3-04. He will be seeking signatures on nomination petitions starting February 16. The jurisdiction covers Starrucca Borough, Bethany Borough, Dyberry, Clinton, Berlin, Buckingham, Damascus, Lebanon, Manchester, Oregon, Mount Pleasant, Preston and Scott Townships. 

LeStrange completed the Police Academy at Lackawanna College in 1996 where he studied foundations of the legal system, functions of the criminal justice system, ethics and values, criminal law, the rules of criminal procedure and evidence and the motor vehicle code. LeStrange also studied various courses in criminal justice at Lackawanna College and Keystone College including juvenile delinquency, sociology and psychology.

LeStrange was born and raised in Wayne County. He resides in Northern Wayne County with his wife Marion of 22 years and his two children Seth and Ava. He currently is the owner-operator of a contracting business throughout the region providing painting, drywall and various home improvement services. 

The primary election will be held May 18. LeStrange said, “If elected I would bring my work experience and education in the criminal justice system, to the position and enjoy serving the community in this capacity.”
