PA hog inventory up three percent from 2023

PENNSYLVANIA — The state’s inventory of all hogs and pigs on September 1, 2024 was 1.48 million head. This was up three percent from September 1, 2023, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report. 

Breeding inventory at 155,000 head was up seven percent from last year. 

Market hog inventory at 1.33 million head was up two percent from last year. 

The June to Auagust 2024 pig crop at 605,000 head was up slightly from 2023. Sows farrowing during this period totaled 50,000 head, down four percent from 2023. The average pigs saved per litter was 12.1 for the June-August period, up four percent from last year.
