ROSCOE, NY – The end result wasn’t really in doubt, as the Lady Bulldogs of Sullivan West (15-4) routed the home team Lady Devils (0-20) by a 41-point margin of victory.

On Friday, February 22, Sullivan West defeated Roscoe 55-14 in the final regular season game for both squads.

The #3-ranked Lady Bulldogs are scheduled to play in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Class C Girls Basketball semifinal against the #2-seeded Lady Spartans of S.S. Seward on Monday, February 25 at 5:30 p.m. at Seward.

While their opponents are headed to sectionals, Roscoe was left in the lurch as they finished the year without a win.

Always magnanimous in defeat, and in victory for that matter, Lady Devils coach Becky Ahart, said, “I wish Sullivan West good luck at Seward.”

Asked about her take on the highs versus the lows of the 2018-2019 season, Ahart said the high watermark was "working with these younger girls," and that "we didn’t have any lows, except losing four seniors.”

According to Ahart, who’s been in the game of girls basketball at “The Home of the Blue Devils” for 33-some years, this was the first season her squad failed to post a win in the scorebook.

Taking a bit of the sting out of the luckless year, a banner in the gym proudly lists the accomplishments of Roscoe’s girls varsity bucketeers in years past: Western Sullivan League (WSL) champions 1975-1976 and 1999-2000 (undefeated), while in the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA), they were Division V champs in 2000-2001, 2001-2002 (undefeated) and 2002-2003.

“It’s been a good season. I’ve enjoyed these girls very much,” Ahart said, adding, “I’m looking forward to the seven that are coming back.”

Sullivan West outscored Roscoe in all four frames: 11-6, 18-5, 14-3 and 12-0.

Big netters for the Lady Bulldogs: Josephine Martinez (18 points), Sabrina Martinez (16 points).

Roscoe’s leading scorers: Madison Rhodes (7 points including a 3-pointer), and Kayla Zamenick contributed a 3-pointer.

Stats from the free throw line: Sullivan West 3/5 (60%), Roscoe 0-2.

Before the game, Roscoe’s quartet of seniors were recognized in an oft-postponed senior night, during which they were joined at center court by family members: Madison Ackerly, Madison Rhodes, Taylor Roseo and Kayla Zamenick. Asked for a thumbnail outline of his strategy against the Lady Spartans of S.S. Seward, Sullivan West coach Pat Donovan replied, “Execute offensively, try to play good defense to lock ‘em down and do the best we can.”

For the Lady Devils of Roscoe, it’s only a matter of time for them to get back on the road to racking up wins. All they have to do is look up at the banner hanging on the gymnasium wall for inspiration.
