OCIAA names Monti’s Bassett, Mitchell senior scholar-athlete

MIDDLETOWN, NY — Monticello High School seniors Owen Bassett and Liza Mitchell have been selected as senior scholar-athletes for the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA).  The award is given to high school seniors “who have distinguished themselves in the classroom and in the athletic arena.” They were honored at an awards breakfast on June 2.

OCIAA names Monti’s Bassett, Mitchell senior scholar-athlete

MIDDLETOWN, NY — Monticello High School seniors Owen Bassett and Liza Mitchell have been selected as senior scholar-athletes for the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA).  The award is given to high school seniors “who have distinguished themselves in the classroom and in the athletic arena.” They were honored at an awards breakfast on June 2.

Liza Mitchell has a 98.82 GPA and plays three sports at Monticello: Alpine skiing, tennis and golf. Asked what drives her to succeed, she answered, “Personal success. I set personal goals to always push myself to perform at my best with my maximum potential.” She will attend SUNY Geneseo and major in childhood education/special education with a concentration in mathematics and a minor in business studies.

Owen Bassett

Owen Bassett has a 100.63 GPA and is involved with golf, cross-country and Nordic skiing at Monticello. Faced with the challenge of managing schoolwork with his demanding sports schedule, he says, “I take everything day by day so that I don’t get too overwhelmed.” In the fall of 2022, Bassett will attend Le Moyne College in Syracuse to study nursing. He hopes to become a helicopter flight nurse after he graduates.
