DOB 6/27/36 – DOD 12/17/22

Joe always spoke of the happy days growing up around St. George’s in NYC with his sister, Olga.

The parish, the school and the drum and bugle corps, and then as a teenager, the choir and dance club. And then with the Basilian priests going to Narrowsburg, he learned how to hold and use a hammer, helping them build cabins. He and Iris (Orysia) Chymczuk met in the Ukrainian Catholic Youth League (UCYL) and married in 1957. They lived in Astoria, NY, and attended Holy Cross Ukrainian Catholic Church and enjoyed many of the Veterans Galas, sharing our Ukrainian culture.

In 1965, Joe had the opportunity to buy and prosper with his newfound business, Imperial Upholstery, serving many prominent NYC hotels, till he retired in 2011.

He thrived on being a people person. He and Iris raised their two children, Joseph, their son, and Adrianne, their daughter. They also have five grandchildren: Jocelyn, Emily, Spencer, Hailey and Angelina; and finally, three great-grandchildren: Dmytro, Sebastian and Winter.

He enjoyed the benefits of traveling, church, work and friends, and was always happy with a smile.

Unfortunately, the flu found him and he died there shortly after. Services were held at the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, in Fresh Meadows, NY, given by Fr. Zbigniew Brzezicki, and Deacon Joseph Lavinio. He is buried in Mount Olivit Cemetery in Maspeth, NY, along with parents Sophie Gural and Dmytro Gural.
