HARRISBURG, PA — The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) has asked Pennsylvanians to nominate their favorite river and trail of the year.
The nomination for trail of the year must be submitted online by November 1. The winning trail will be recognized in a news release by DCNR and through a commemorative poster for statewide distribution, with a trailhead marker along the trail, and a grant for educational programs to promote safety and environmental protection on the trail. Visit https://www.dcnr.pa.gov/Communities/TrailDevelopment/TrailOfTheYear/Pages/default.aspx for more information about where to submit the form and supporting materials.
The nomination period for river of the year is open through Monday, November 11, at 5:00 PM. Selected nominations will be voted on by the public beginning in late November. For more information about the River of the Year program, visit the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers' (POWR) website. To nominate a river or waterway, visit https://pecpa.org/grants-awards/ scroll down to “Apply."
The Lackawanna River won River of the Year in 2020, and is ineligible for nomination in this year's contest.
Once a river is selected, the local host will organize a year-long series of events and activities to celebrate the river, including the popular River of the Year Sojourn. The nominating organization of the winning river will receive a $10,000 leadership grant to help fund these River of the Year activities.
