The Delaware Valley Arts Alliance’s (DVAA) Winter Salon Series continues to be a great success, as evidenced by the crowd attending the event last Saturday, “Off the Shelf,” a literary reading. What fun it was to sit back and listen to enthusiastic, animated local actors read passages from books found in One Grand bookstore on Main Street. Many were inspired enough to cross the street and purchase a copy of one of the books for their own collection. The next scheduled event is “Bring on the Thaw,” a literary reading Saturday, February 25 at 2 p.m. This free event, co-sponsored by the Upper Delaware Writers Collective, will fill the afternoon with original prose and short fiction by area writers inspired by the word “melt.” Hopefully Mother Nature will be listening and be inspired too.

But that’s two weeks from now—so what can you do this weekend? This Saturday, February 18, DVAA will have a chill cook off from 2 to 4 p.m. Ten crocks of chili will be available for tasting, along with biscuits; wine and beer will be provided. Admission is a $20 donation and all proceeds will benefit DVAA.

You probably have noticed that some films shown at the Callicoon Theater are labeled CineArt. Have you ever wondered what the CineArt designation means? The DVAA is fortunate to have the support of Jim and Barbara Kayton, owners of the Callicoon Theater. For many years now the Kaytons have chosen four to six CineArt movies each year to screen on behalf of DVAA. With every CineArt film, a $1 donation is made to DVAA for each attendee plus a small percentage of the box office. The Kaytons choose movies receiving acclaim and awards this time of year. Currently the CineArt film is “Manchester By the Sea” which finishes up this weekend, followed by “Lion” the following week. We are thankful the Kaytons support Narrowsburg through their generosity toward DVAA.

Last announcement: As a reminder, St. Paul’s church has discontinued Saturday services. All services will be held on Sundays.

Enjoy the week.
