Not many towns are able to boast businesses that have been in continuous operation for over 175 years. Narrowsburg is special in that regard. The Narrowsburg Inn was built by Abraham Cuddeback in 1840 and opened its door as the Narrowsburg Hotel. It’s hard to imagine all the people that have walked through the doors of the Inn, from a Civil War solider to a Hollywood screen star. Over the years, the inn has had many owners and many names, such as the Raftsman’s Hotel, catering to the timber rafters especially in the latter half of the 1800s; the Engelmann Farm House, which ran more like a boarding house; The Wayside Inn; The Century Hotel and the Narrowsburg Inn, so named in 1988.

Although the Narrowsburg Inn was not in full swing during this winter, things are about to change. Alison Brown is the new proprietor of the business of the inn—restaurant and hotel. She made it clear she does not own the building, still the property of Ned Lang. Alison, who has been in the restaurant business for 25 years, envisions a restaurant catering to the entire family, a gathering place for meetings and great parties. Tablecloths adorn the tables in the two front dining rooms, and for those wanting a more casual atmosphere there are still tables in the bar area. The menu includes many choices ranging from wings to salads to shrimp to steak. Something for everyone.

Entertainment will be a regular part of the operation. Watch for future performers and come enjoy a part of our history. Right now, Alison has decided to start conservatively with hours on Thursday and Friday from 4 to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon to 10 p.m. As business and the summer progress, she will add more hours. For more information phone 845/252-3998. Stop in the Narrowsburg Inn and be a part of our local history.

In closing, happy Mother’s Day to all moms.
