Narrowsburg Graduation Class of 1963

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — I have to start off by saying I made a goof in my last column. Supervisor Gary Maas brought it to my attention that the Litter Pluck is not canceled, it will be rescheduled for another date.

When there are no events being held, it’s very hard to give you information on the town. In the last few columns, I was directing you to the Lake Huntington Facebook page hosted by Paul Genco. I’ve since received a Facebook message from Doreen Kraus telling me about the Villa Theresa. Doreen was friends with Theresa Jean Joseph (Gino) whose parents owned the Villa Theresa. The Joseph family hosted one of the Narrowsburg High School graduation parties for the class of 1963. I called Doreen to ask her some questions, and she said, “Let me get my high school book.” Phone in hand, she walked upstairs to get the book and started telling me who she graduated with. When she said Herman Esselman, I had to ask, “Was he as good looking back then as he is now?” She said, “Oh yes.” I said, “Dottie is a lucky lady.”

The Joseph Family gave a barbeque for the graduates and the band played calypso music. Doreen told me that, in 2003, they had a class reunion and that was the last time she had seen Bud Umnik.  Being the nice person that I am, I gave Dottie Esselman a heads up that her husband was going to be in my column. Talking with Dottie, she told me that Denis Jungblut, Sandy Nuttycombe, Jack Nearing and Bud Umnik also graduated with Herman and Doreen.  Dottie was not in the class, but she was dating Herman on May 1; they will be married 55 years. Happy Anniversary.

There is also a page on Facebook called Sullivan County, New York Vintage Postcards and Historic Photographs. There are pictures of Wragge’s Bowling Alley in 1909, pictures of upper Lake Huntington and old pictures of Pete’s Pub back in the day. It’s very cool, and as I said before, I love reading everyone’s comments.

Louis Vogel, a Cochecton resident, sent me an email telling me he is staying put in NYC and looks forward to my column to read about what’s going on in Lake Huntington. I told Louis not much since everyone is staying home.

Every night at 7 p.m. in the parking lot at the Tusten Cochecton Library, cars gather and folks honk their horns or clap their hands as the church bell rings. This is a way to thank all those essential workers on the front lines who keep us going. Please stay safe.

My brothers both got retested: my youngest brother is negative, but my oldest brother is still positive with the coronavirus.

Keep smiling and have a great week. You can email me at leeniebeans@citlink.net or call 845/252-3568 if you have any news. You can always check me out in community living.
