HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania State Legislature has passed House Resolution 106, terminating Gov. Tom Wolf’s COVID-19 disaster emergency declaration. The resolution comes after last month’s primary election, which added a section to Article IV of the Pennsylvania Constitution allowing the legislature to end an emergency declaration after 21 days.

Narrowsburg Fire Department parade to return

NARROWSBURG, NY — After a one-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the Narrowsburg Fire Department’s Fourth of July Parade and Chicken Barbecue returns. The parade will step off at 3 p.m. from the intersection of Bridge Street, Kirk Road and Erie Avenue and will proceed down Erie Avenue, past the River Reporter, up Main Street and onto Bridge Street to the firehouse.

Floats from area businesses and civic organizations are welcome and are encouraged to thematically represent “Better Together.” The theme comes from the title of a video made by Greencard Pictures at the start of the pandemic, directed by Zac Stuart-Pontier, emphasizing connectivity and mutual support in a socially distanced world. “It just kinda symbolizes that we do things better together, that we are better as a community when we’re together,” said Stephen Stuart, assistant chief and safety officer of the fire department.

Takeout chicken barbecue with coleslaw, baked potato, cranberry sauce, roll and dessert will be available for pickup from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the firehouse. Tickets are available at myrivertickets and through members of the Narrowsburg Volunteer Fire Department.

Town of Bethel unveils bench in honor of Officer Darryl Yates

BETHEL, NY — On Saturday, June 12, the Town of Bethel unveiled a bench at the Forest Reserve in Smallwood in honor of Bethel Constable Darryl Yates. Town supervisor Daniel Sturm spoke before a well attended gathering, which included Senator Mike Martucci, Undersheriff Eric Chaboty, legislative chair Rob Doherty, members of the Bethel Town Board and police force, and members of Yates’ family.

Yates began his career as a police officer in Woodridge, then spent around 10 years as a constable in the Town of Bethel. He and his friend and partner officer John Panos were awarded the Citizenship Award from the Town of Bethel for saving a drowning man in White Lake. He passed away on September 16, 2020, at the age of 53.

“We all miss him greatly,” said Sturm. “When you think of a public servant, Daryll was it. He was well respected by the community and by his peers. He served us all with honor, dedication, and high values.”

Casey introduces child-centric legislative agenda

WASHINGTON, DC —  In an effort to ensure every child in America has the freedom to reach their full potential, Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) introduced the Five Freedoms for America’s Children on June 9.

Casey’s plan identifies five basic freedoms necessary for children to succeed: the freedom to be healthy, the freedom to be economically secure, the freedom to learn, the freedom from hunger, and the freedom to be safe from harm. Proposals to guarantee those freedoms include automatic enrollment in Medicaid until age 18, the establishment of children’s savings accounts for every child whose parent(s) or guardian earns under $100,000 per year and permanent expansion of the Child Tax Credit.
