TOWN OF COCHECTON, NY — Sheriff’s deputies have arrested John McArdle, 76, for the murder of Anthony Bertolini, 40. According to the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, officers received a 911 call at about 1 a.m. on May 10. Officers went to 449 Skipperine Road in the Town of Cochecton to investigate and found Bertolini deceased seated in a vehicle in the driveway of the home.

The deputies interviewed a woman witness who was outside of the residence and then attempted to make contact with two male subjects who were inside the residence. Initially, the two males refused to exit the residence but eventually complied.

Detectives determined that Bertolini had stopped by the home to visit the woman when McArdle came out of the house with a long gun and shot Bertolini through the windshield of the vehicle he was sitting in.

Bertolini was pronounced dead at the scene by Sullivan County Coroner Michael Speer. Acting District Attorney Meagan Galligan prepared a search warrant that was executed at the residence later in the day. As a result of that search, police recovered three rifles and a handgun. McArdle was charged with one count of Murder in the Second Degree and related weapons charges.

McArdle was arraigned via video internet link by Sullivan County Court Judge James Farrell with defense attorney Scott Russell in attendance. McArdle was remanded to the Sullivan County Jail without bail. The motive for the shooting is still under investigation.

Sheriff Mike Schiff said that he was confident that this was an isolated incident involving only the subjects at that particular residence and that the public is not otherwise in any danger.
