HARRISBURG, PA — Rep. Mike Turzai, the speaker of the PA House, announced in January 23 that he would not run for another term in November. Turzai was elected to the House in 2001 and became speaker in 2015. At a press conference, he said he would be moving to a job in the private sector.

Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati issued the following statement regarding the retirement:

“Speaker Mike Turzai has been an outstanding public servant, working tirelessly to better our commonwealth for nearly two decades. He has offered strong direction for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, while spearheading numerous significant legislative accomplishments.

“For the last five years, Speaker Turzai and I have worked closely together in our respective roles. It has been a privilege to collaborate with him on issues such as school choice, liquor modernization, protecting the unborn and ensuring that Pennsylvania taxpayers are respected during budget negotiations.
“We will miss his vision and dedication in Harrisburg. I wish Mike well in his next endeavor.”
