'Sex and the Barn,’ the ins and outs of breeding animals

CALLICOON CENTER, NY — On two Saturdays, August 3 and August 17 from 5 to 6:30 p.m., the Apple Pond Farm, located at 80 Hahn Road, is hosting a program that explores the ins and outs of animal breeding and husbandry.

Attendees will have an opportunity to spend time with the animals while having an in-depth discussion with farmers Sonja and Celine.

RSVP is required by calling 845/482-4764. This event costs $15 per person, and participants must be at least 16-years old.

100th birthday of Balsam Lake Mountain Firetower

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — On Friday, August 2 from 4 to 7 p.m., Morgan Outdoors is hosting an open house in celebration of the 100th birthday of Balsam Lake Mountain Firetower. Numerous displays will include information on the history of the tower, the fire lookouts who served there, its restoration, the flora and fauna in the area and a salute to the volunteers who have been caring for the tower.

The following day, Saturday, August 3 from 12 noon to 2 p.m., there will be special children’s events and an appearance by Smokey Bear, who is celebrating his own 75th birthday.

Peace, love and mermaids

SHOHOLA, PA — The Barryville Area Arts Association is hosting its annual march of mermaids and merman Saturday, August 3. In honor of the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, hippies’ costumes are also welcome in the parade.

The parade will take place at 3:30 p.m at the Artists’ Market Community Center located at 114 Richardson Ave.

Denny Daniel and his traveling Museum of Interesting Things will be on display; he will begin his formal presentation at 4:30 p.m. Complimentary refreshments, live entertainment and other fun activities will be available.

Half a million dollars to recognize volunteer and community efforts

BETHEL, NY — The 2019 season of Sullivan Renaissance will culminate in a celebration of volunteers and communities with close to half a million dollars to be awarded at the annual awards ceremony on Monday, August 5 at 5 p.m. in the Event Gallery at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.

This ceremony is the grand finale of months of volunteer efforts to beautify public spaces. Enjoy entertainment by Farm Arts Collective and live music in the vein of Woodstock ’69. Light refreshments will be available.

‘Birdhouses and Books,’ adult summer reading challenge

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — The Western Sullivan Public Library is hosting its first-ever book-themed birdhouse decorating competition. The challenge is open to any interested reader: check out a book or audiobook from the Callicoon, Jeffersonville, or Narrowsburg branch and decorated a birdhouse, provided by the library, based on your choice.

Bill Handleman Memorial Award goes to local writer

OCEANPORT, NJ — Mike Farrell of the Associated Press was named the winner of the 2019 Bill Handleman Memorial Award for outstanding coverage of last year’s TVG.com Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park Racetrack.

“Mike’s knowledge about thoroughbred racing, his dedication to the sport and his professionalism were again reflected in his coverage of the 2018 Haskell Invitational,” said John. F. Heims, Monmouth Park’s director of racing and racing secretary. “He was able to take us both behind the scenes while capturing the elegance of Good Magic’s Haskell victory a year ago.”

Discover SUNY Sullivan: a day for prospective students

LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY — Students interested in beginning their college careers this fall are welcome to attend “Discover SUNY Sullivan Day” on Wednesday, August 7 at 11 a.m. This is an opportunity for those interested in enrolling to visit the campus, learn about financial aid and the application processes, explore housing options and hear about everything happening outside of the classroom, including sports, activities and clubs.

Students who bring an official transcript will receive instant acceptance to the college, take any necessary academic placement tests and will leave with their fall schedule of classes, which begins August 26.

Outdoor oyster festival

MILFORD, PA — The Hotel Fauchère is hosting its first-ever Fauchère Oyster Fest with the Island Creek Oyster Company of Duxbury, MA. The event will be Monday, August 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the hotel’s enclosed garden, and will feature live music. Four varieties of oysters will be offered: Island Creek (Duxbury, MA), Moon Shoal (Barnstable, MA), Mookie Blue (Maine) and Wellfleet (Wellfleet, MA).
