Manor zips Yellowjackets 6-0

ELDRED, NY — For the home team Eldred Yellowjackets (0-9 overall, 0-4 league), it was a rather disheartening showing, as the visiting Wildcats of Livingston Manor (4-6, 4-2 ) nipped off their stingers in a non-league varsity baseball game on Tuesday, May 8.

On the bright side of things, both dugouts kept up a string of encouraging chatter to inspire their fellow lads of spring to ever greater endeavors, on defense and offense.

In a nutshell, the game was a primo example of rural high school athletic completion, as the umps and coaches guided the players throughout this annual rite of passage, and the fans rooted for their respective teams without any disparaging drama—unlike the big leagues, where at times things can get a bit unruly from up in the bleachers.

Manor (4-6 overall, 4-2 league) took the day, scoring a run in the second inning on an RBI single, four in the fifth on a combination of runs and errors, and closed it out in the final frame on a single swat and an error.

Ah, those pesky errors can really ruin your afternoon.

Wildcats pitcher Vincent Marchese posted the win, and was backed up at the plate by catcher Garrett Shaver.

“We could do better… fielding, batting, pitching, everything,” said Marchese, an 18-year-old senior.

In the number two field position, Shaver, 15-year-old sophomore Shaver added, “We’ve got to get more line drives… not so many pop-ups… we’ve got things to improve on.”

Cole Cooper, a 14-year-old freshman hurled for the home team, and by all accounts from the opposition, kept the Wildcats off balance with his signature style of slow pitching.

Just when you expecting a burner to the plate, it came home slowly, just tardy enough to throw you off stride.

“We made a couple of errors in the field and should have hit better… we had a ton of errors,” he said.

Eldred’s 17-year-old junior catcher ChettKelty, said of the so-far winless season, “The season has been kind of up and down for us…. we’ve had great moments and then some low moments”.

“We always keep fighting and never give up… it was difficult going up against a slower pitcher.”

OK, coaches, it’s your turn to step up in the media spotlight.

“I think this (young) team has a lot of potential…we just keep coming up short, and have a lot of mental errors”, said Matthew Curreri, those sons Joseph and Nicholas proudly wear the distinctive colors of the Yellowjackets.

Jeff Loeffler, the Wildcats big cat, said he thought his team “played fairly well…I’d have liked to see the bats swing a little better and put up some more runs.”

“Their pitcher kept us off balance.”
