HONESDALE, PA — District Attorney Patrick Robinson announced the arrest of Michael Mowry, 41, of Beach Lake on Wednesday, July 24. Mowry has been charged with terroristic threats causing serious public inconvenience and bomb threats.

According to a Honesdale Borough Police report, a 911 center received an anonymous bomb threat Wednesday morning. “I have placed bombs around Honesdale, especially in the hospital area,” the caller said.

According to the police report, “The dispatchers were able to ‘ping’ the phone, which resulted in a phone number previously used by Michael Mowry.”

Members of the Honesdale police, Wayne County Sheriff’s Department and Wayne County detectives conducted a 50-minute manhunt resulting in the apprehension of Mowry at 11:50 a.m.

Magisterial Judge Linus Myers set bail at $25,000. The preliminary hearing was scheduled for Wednesday, July 31.

Driver jumped out of truck before it flipped

BEACH LAKE, PA — Pennsylvania State Police say Menachem Sorkin was driving a Mack Truck on Peggy Runway Road when the road gave out beneath the truck and flipped it toward a guard rail. According to the police report, Sorkin was driving garbage from the Kings Soldiers summer camp to a landfill in New York.

“While coming down the hill, the roadway suddenly gave out, pulling the truck off the road and into the guard rail. He knew it was going over the cliff, so he jumped out right before it flipped over the guard rail,” the report said. The road had recently been resurfaced and, according to the police report, there was a drop-off of six to 10 inches at the edge of the travel lane.

The responding officer saw that the pavement collapsed under the right-side tires of Sorkin’s truck, and also that the collapsed guard rail had been marked for replacement because it had previously been damaged. The trooper also observed orange paint on the collapsed guard rail where it had been struck by the truck.

The police report said no citations had been issued because roadway conditions were found to be the cause of the crash.

Money for New York PFAS study

WASHINGTON, D.C. —U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand on July 26 announced $890,851 in federal funding to support a New York State health study on toxic PFAS chemicals. This funding was allocated through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and will be used to expand a biomonitoring program to better assess the extent of PFAS exposure in New York communities. New York State is one of six recipients for this funding and is expected to receive a total of about $5 million of federal funding for this study over the course of five years.

“From Newburgh to Hoosick Falls to Suffolk County, New Yorkers across the state have been plagued by the toxic contamination of their drinking water by PFAS. Worse still, we don’t even know the complete extent of this carcinogenic contamination Upstate and on Long Island,” said Schumer. “Fortunately, with this federal funding, New York will be able to expand its PFAS biomonitoring program to better identify exactly how its residents’ health and well-being are being impacted by this pollution.”

“This is an important step forward, and I will continue to do everything I can to help our communities in New York and throughout the country recover from this crisis,” Gillibrand said.
