Ever had a sudden fantasy overtake you in the middle of the day? A secret desire to go to Europe, perhaps to a little London boutique on Carnaby Street? Look no further than 25 Main Street #2 in Narrowsburg, next to Madame Fortuna. You may not get the frequent flyer miles, but Narrowsburg’s newest shop, Tinker and Nidge, will instantly transport you without removing your shoes and waiting in TSA lines.

The store does an exceptional job of fulfilling its motto, which is, “We gather and make lovely things for you and your home.” Each corner and nook of the store, which opened in May, offers a delightful little treasure or surprise. Vintage knick-knacks, one-of-a-kind trinkets, beautiful linens and more await the eager scavenger with a discerning eye.

Tinker and Nidge, Nidge being a British nickname for the name Nigel, has long been a goal of owner Barbara Davidson. After living in the UK for 17 years, and traveling throughout France and other parts of Europe, she knew that she’d eventually open a boutique shop featuring unique antiques, textiles and vintage items alongside hand-crafted and other lovingly chosen, useful items.

The where and when of the store were both up in the air until Barbara, her husband, Angus, their two sons and their dog, Bacon, found themselves in the best corner of Sullivan County: Narrowsburg.

Initially, they had hoped to set up shop the in spring of 2020; COVID-19 had other plans. However, the minute you step into the store, you’ll see delayed gratification has paid off. The Davidsons are delighted to now be part of the distinctive shopping experience offered in our little town where they have joined so many fantastic places and amazing local shop owners.

Barbara describes their boutique as containing all the sorts of things that they love, including a wide range of hand-crafted paper and stationery imported from England, vintage French workwear and individual items that, like each of us, have an interesting story to tell.

Barbara stresses they are very grateful for everyone who has moseyed down “the Mews” to support them. They are especially thankful to all their local business neighbors who have been a wonderful resource for advice and help as they’ve opened shop.

Some would probably describe the shop as being curated with a story behind each item, which Barbara loves to ponder. The next time you’re in the store, ask her to share a detail or two and be on the lookout for things to evolve. There are plenty of items already in inventory, with many other one-of-a-kinds waiting to take their place as lovely things find their next home.

PS: A shout out to Carolyn Bivens, Natalie Sauer, Ben Carson, the town of Tusten Highway Department and whoever else was involved with the wonderful class of 2021 banners proudly flying over town. All supplies and flags were generously donated by Schumacher Systems Inc. The project was coordinated by the Sullivan West Parents of 2021 Seniors Flag Committee: Michele Hemmer, Julie Gaebel, Annette Rasmussen, Rebekah and Dale Hess. All involved would also like to acknowledge the Sullivan West administration and staff.

The last few years have been difficult for graduating seniors, with so many milestones missed. Figuring out how to honor them and their hard work was inspired. Thank you, and congratulations to all the graduates and their families.
