Lumberland announces cancellations, deals with traffic

GLEN SPEY, NY — The Lumberland Town Board, meeting via Zoom, conducted its monthly meeting with a full agenda.

In an effort to regain some normalcy, the offices will be open during the week, but by appointment only. Masks must be worn and social distance must be maintained.

But in keeping with the times, several cancellations were announced, including the Memorial Day celebration, July 4 parade and festivities, and the summer youth program. The town also suspended the issuance of any permits for the use of Circle Park or the town pavilion, as both facilities are closed until further notice.

The town clean-up day has been postponed to a later date to be announced.

Supervisor Jennie Mellan reported that she had received comments from residents along Route 97 concerned about the cars and motorcycles that have been speeding through the town. She has spoken with the constables who have been increasing patrolling and issuing tickets. Since Route 97 is a state highway, the town cannot set out speed indicators, but Mellan will reach out to the state for assistance in addressing the issue, as well as the National Park Service when its patrols begin along the scenic byway corridor.

The town received a grant from the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan and has applied those funds to establish a temporary dry good food pantry for town residents. One order per household can be made.

An appointment to visit the pantry or additional information can be obtained by calling the town clerk’s office at 845/856-8600 ext. 6, with pickup at the Lumberland Senior Center behind the municipal office on Proctor Road.

The board thanked town clerk Laurie Terry for spearheading this venture.

The board reviewed an Unsafe Building and Investigation Report issued by code enforcement officer Christy Flynn. The building is located at 1148 Rte. 97 and Flynn recommended that the building be demolished.
