Lorraine Marie Naused Miesner of Roscoe, NY, died on February 17 from an ill-fated strike by a foul-tempered chestnut mare. The long-time area resident, and most interesting person in many peoples’ lives, was 73.

Daughter of the late Henry and Margaret Naused, Lori was born on July 8, 1945 in Queens, NY. Lori and her late brother Fred enjoyed an exciting childhood in which they accidentally shot an army helicopter with a bottle rocket and collected mercury for science experiments from the broken thermometers of a nearby hospital. She attended St. John’s University but was expelled for participating in a political demonstration. Afterwards, she spent a year studying archeology at Oxford.

Lori taught middle school in Brooklyn before eventually relocating to Sullivan County, where she resided for the past 46 years. A multi-talented woman, Lori worked as a census taker, a school-bus driver, and a stable manager amongst other occupations. Her varied accomplishments include surviving polio, owning a green Morgan roadster, training a championship squirrel-treeing dog, breeding warmblood horses and raising multiple pets and people. She loved the Catskills, loathed Colorado and could describe a blue sky in a thousand ways.

Lori’s survivors include her husband, Paul Miesner; her daughters, Helen Rose Miesner and Christine Miesner; her sisters-in-law, Kathryn Carlson and Helen Bartlett, and their husbands, David Carlson and Bob Bartlett; five nephews, Mark Naused and his wife, Jen; Christopher Naused and his wife, Jennifer; James Bartlett and his wife, Kate; Matt Bartlett and his wife, Julie; and Paul Carlson; one niece, Karen Hertline and her husband, Joe; several grandchildren, great nephews, and great nieces; and numerous four-legged friends. She is predeceased by her brother, Fred Naused, and her niece, Jeanne Carlson.

Visitation will be Sunday, February 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Harris Funeral Home, Railroad Avenue, Roscoe, New York.  A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. in the funeral home.
