Delaware Valley High School band marches in the 1956 Fremont Center Memorial Day parade. (Arnie’s “Scrounge Lounge” is seen the the rear right of the photo.)

On Monday, May 28, western Sullivan County celebrated Memorial Day with its 134th annual parade in Fremont Center. Complete with a marching band, fire trucks and numerous proud veterans, the parade is a major event each year for local residents.

Fremont Center’s Memorial Day Parade is the second oldest in New York State, surpassed only by the Memorial Day parade in Waterloo, NY, which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2016.

In 1884 (134 years ago), the nation was being led by President Chester A. Arthur. A pound of sugar was priced at seven cents, and one was able to buy an average work horse for a mere $150.

Times were vastly different when Fremont Center first organized a Memorial Day parade, yet the tradition continued on Monday as large crowds gathered to remember both the local history of the area and the people who risked or sacrificed their lives for the country.

The Basket Historical Society preserves and presents the history of the Upper Delaware area. If you are interested in becoming a member or finding out more contact us at baskethistsociety@gmail.com.
