Hawley’s Winterfest celebration, which occurred this year from December 8 through 10, has been around for 18 years now. The very first Winterfest was held from December 16 through 19, 1999, and the River Reporter article announcing it reported, “The Winterfest project began as an idea within the Merchants Committee last spring and was quickly expanded to become a community-wide event, involving input from other groups and individuals. Plans are now well underway to bring both the private and business sector together to celebrate the season as well as the turning of this century, and to invite nearby communities to join Hawley, PA in doing so.”
This photograph was printed in The River Reporter the week after the first festival. The caption read, “Pauline Cortez of White Mills and her gentleman friend Norman Eriksen of Greenlawn, N.Y. are pictured during a Sunday afternoon Victorian tea, served at The Settlers Inn in Hawley. The tea was one of the concluding events in the week’s Winterfest celebration in Hawley.”
