The year is 1940, and here are students gathered in the sunshine at the Cochecton schoolhouse, now known as the old Cochecton town hall. Arthur Hassis, historian for the Cochecton Preservation Society, is standing in front of the teacher, a very youthful Miss Mary Martin (right). There are actually three classes in this group. Please share names of others pictured so that we can add them to this article on our website archives. At our meetings, whenever Miss Mary Martin’s name is mentioned and someone has been her student, there is always a heartwarming story shared. This contributed picture is from the family of Lillian Krauss.
The Cochecton Preservation Society meets the first Tuesday of the month March through October, 7 p.m. at the Erie Depot, 8537 Rte. 97, Cochecton. Free, with refreshments. Tours by appointment. Visit Cochectonpreservationsociety.com, email cps12726@gmail.com or call 845/932-8104.
