Methodist services in Fosterdale, NY started in 1865 as classes in homes, led by a circuit-rider preacher. A church was organized in 1871, with services iheld n the old Fosterdale schoolhouse. The Fosterdale United Methodist Church (FUMC) building was dedicated in the fall of 1881.

In 1916, the corner tower and entrance, pulpit alcove and eight stained glass windows were renovated. W. Stanley Risch Hall, dedicated in 1969, provided church schoolrooms and a meeting place for Boy Scout Troop 115. The Grange Hall became church property in 1979, thus preserving the building and providing a place for church and community activities. Jean, Tom and Timothy McCoach, Fred and Shirley Bunt, John and Inez Fischer, Lillian Fischer, Phil and Marie Snedecker were among the many devoted workers. Pictured is the commemorative plate for the FUMC 100th anniversary.

Later this year, the Cochecton Preservation Society’s (CPS) annual “Coffee, Tea and History” will focus on our local places of worship. Contact Jerold Yavarkovsky, 845/932-8210 if you have a memory to share. The CPS meets the first Tuesday of the month through October, 7 p.m. at the Erie Depot, 8537 Rte. 97, Cochecton.
