Long Eddy

Posted

Passing through Long Eddy, you might notice a sign signifying its history as Sullivan County’s first city.

Visit the Basket Historical Society in town for more history on what was, for 11 years beginning in 1867, called “Douglas City,” or step into the hallowed Long Eddy Saloon—rumored to be the oldest, unchanging business in the area. Beautiful old houses sit by the roadside, marking your journey along the byway 10 miles before Hancock. Long Eddy resident Matthew Cooley owns two of those historic homes, both boarding houses from the 1800s he’s put a lot of work into restoring.

Originally from Florida, and then a Brooklynite for 11 years, Cooley fell in love with Long Eddy on trips from the city. Eventually he was able to move there full time.

“We were determined [to live here],” Cooley said, “because we love the people, clean air, the nature, the scenery, incredible food right here, the small-town atmosphere. Everybody knows everybody else. People will give you the shirt off their back. Within the first six months of living here, I had met more friends—lifetime friends—than I had met living 11 years in Brooklyn."
