The golden rule

With all the insanity that has been in the news lately, I thought Icould participate by suggesting that, for the sake of our sanity, we all follow the Golden Rule for just one day. If after that one day, we want to go for two, why not?

The Golden Rule is close to being a universal human concept. It matters not which religion one professes to follow... all the major religions (including atheism) have the same view regarding loving our neighbor. Simply speaking, love is the Golden Rule.

Thanks from Grey Towers

On behalf of the USDA Forest Service and the staff, volunteers and partners at Grey Towers National Historic Site, Milford, PA, I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation for the patience and compassion exhibited by so many during the recent closure due to a lapse in federal appropriations.

With the enactment of the continuing resolution on January 25, 2019, we resumed our regular winter operations [last] week. Employees, volunteers and partners are already busy planning programs, tours, events, conferences, meetings and administrative operations for a busy and productive 2019 visitor season. Our facilities, museum and landscape team are focusing on areas that are normally accessible this time of year and busy catching up so they can complete spring maintenance and upkeep projects in a timely manner.

We are grateful for the outreach and support offered during the challenging weeks of furlough. We appreciate the offers of free coffee, food pantry access and discounts at local eateries, to name a few. We are glad many of you were able to enjoy walking our beautiful grounds and helped keep an eye on things for us. Thank you for being so respectful toward and thoughtful of this special place. We are grateful for our partners who were willing and able to keep you all well informed through traditional social media venues.

Thank you for your continued patience as we work to catch up so that we can launch a safe and exciting 2019 visitor season. Please give us a call at 570/296-9630 and keep checking our website www.fs.usda.gov/greytowers as we bring you updated information. We look forward to seeing you at Grey Towers later this year.

Thanks from Samaritin’s Purse

I am writing to thank Narrowsburg residents for sharing the true meaning of Christmas with children in need this past holiday season.

Because of the generosity of donors in Narrowsburg and across the United States, Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, collected more than 8.8 million shoeboxes in 2018. Combined with those collected from partnering countries in 2018, the ministry is now sending more than 10.6 million shoebox gifts to children suffering from poverty, natural disasters, war, disease and famine.

These simple gifts bring smiles to the faces of children around the world. Packed with fun toys, school supplies and hygiene items, these gifts bring joy and are a tangible expression of God’s love. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has collected and delivered more than 157 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 160 countries and territories.

It’s not too late for people to make a difference. Though drop-off locations serving Narrowsburg shoebox packers are closed until November 2019, anyone can still pack a personalized shoebox gift online at samaritanspurse.org/buildonline. Information about year-round volunteer opportunities can also be found at samaritanspurse.org/volunteerwithOCC.

Thank you again to everyone who participated in this global project—many who do so year after year. These simple gifts send a message to children worldwide that they are loved and not forgotten.
