Layers of collaboration and accomplishment

Supporting the fabric of our magnificent valley

From the teacher speaking on behalf of students who are ably handling the pandemic, to fire department personnel relating impromptu rescues along the Hawk’s Nest section of Route 97, the Upper Delaware Council Awards banquet on September 12 presented an in-depth snapshot of the interconnected cooperative web that serves at the foundation of life in the Upper Delaware River Valley.

From the artist who put forth that we who create are all artists, to the community network of people who pick up trash along the roads, these interconnections are our safety net. Our social net. They are interconnections that strengthen us all. They give our area resilience and showcase the strength and diversity when people with differing skills are all focused on serving the community.

The 2020 and 2021 recipients of the community awards spoke from their hearts and from their passions. They told stories of the impetus that caused them to accomplish the great work that was being recognized that Sunday afternoon. They spoke of personal connections, organizations working together, and heroic deeds that save lives and enrich the community.

Care of the environment, complete with tackling vicious invasives, mingled with the celebration of local public radio and 10 years of a film festival. History was recognized.

It was an amazing display of the strength of the Upper Delaware River Valley.

This collaboration and the mutual appreciation of the multitude of work that gets done bodes well for our region. It speaks to our ability to cross state and county lines in support of a unified river valley.

As our world and our nation face the pressing challenges of a changing climate, racial tensions, income and wealth disparity, and a debilitating ideological divide, politics was not on display. There was no power over, and seemingly no tension between the many players. Instead there was a foundational spirit that focused on what can be accomplished when we work together, each doing our own thing.

Tackling challenges on a landscape scale involves many layers of coordination and collaboration.

Don’t be mistaken, getting to gratitude for the many interconnections is not always an easy journey. Everyone must give up a little bit of their own self-determination to be in concert with others, not unlike the towns and townships in the river corridor that must be in compliance with the River Management Plan.

But in the end, as told by those who received awards, the journey, the difficulties and the connections are well worth the effort and yield amazing results.

Congratulations to the Upper Delaware Council for recognizing the breath of activities and accomplishments that add to the quality of life, the sustaining of life and the celebration of life here in the Upper Delaware River Valley.

Congratulations all.
