TARRYTOWN, NY — Knowledge isn’t just power, it is reassurance and strength.

Family caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s disease and professionals are invited to a forum in Tarrytown that will cover the latest science and research into this progressive disorder, which affects memory and behavior.

Health and wellness fair at SUNY Sullivan

LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY — On Wednesday, April 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., SUNY Sullivan is hosting its annual Health and Wellness Fair. The fair is free and open to the public. ‘Hoops for Hope’ benefits Wayne Memorial Hospital patients

HONESDALE, PA — The Honesdale High School Hornets basketball teams raised $1,500 for Wayne Memorial’s chemotherapy and infusion clinic. The annual “Shooting for a Cure” games, formerly “Think Pink” for the girls, aims to raise awareness and money for fighting cancer. The motto for the teams this year was “our teams, our school, our community, our fight!”

Weight loss surgery seminar

CARBONDALE, PA — A seminar, Weight Loss Surgery 101, will be held on Wednesday, April 10 at 6 p.m. at the Greater Carbondale Area Chamber of Commerce. The presenter, bariatric surgeon Lisa Medvetz, will discuss both surgical and non-surgical aspects of procedures currently offered at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, PA. The procedures to be discussed include intragastric balloon, AspireAssist, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass and duodenal switch. Dr. Medvetz has over 10 years of experience performing weight loss surgeries.

Methods in managing lower back pain

HONESDALE, PA — Access Physical Therapy & Wellness will host its spring open house on Saturday, April 6 from 1 to 3 p.m. The program will feature alternative approaches to lower back pain management by practitioners from Access, Synergy Orthopedics and Mayasblends Aromatherapy, and from a licensed acupuncturist and a licensed massage therapist. The recent renovations and additions to its wellness programs will also be discussed by Access’s physical therapy manager Kevin Dunn.


Symposium for younger caregivers affected by dementia

NEWBURGH, NY — A free symposium aiming to remove the stigma of old age associated with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia will take place on Friday, April 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mount Saint Mary College in the Hudson Hall Auditorium. “Alzheimer’s Diaries: The Younger Caregiver Experience” will explore and highlight the experiences of younger caregivers; participants will share excerpts from their personal journals. There will be information on the free resources the Alzheimer’s Association offers throughout the Hudson Valley.

“Younger individuals under 65 are also affected [by Alzheimer’s]—one out of every six millennial caregivers are caring for someone with dementia,” said Cody Medina, community engagement manager and diversity specialist for the Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter.
