I am sure you all know by now that my buddy, my friend, my priest, Fr. William L. Scully, OFM, Fr. Bill passed away on Sunday, July 15, 2018, 55 years to the day after he joined the seminary. My heart is broken. When I lost my parents and husband, I always had Fr. Bill. He was my go-to man. I would stop by and visit him coming up from Queens and watch the football and baseball games with him. He was a Giants and Mets fan just like me. Fr. Bill had a wake at St. Anthony’s Church in Butler, NJ along with his funeral mass. Fr. Joseph Juracek, who used to be at St. Mary’s in Obernburg, is a priest in St. Anthony’s. Fr. Joseph was telling me that Fr. Bill was having pains in his stomach and was taken to the hospital. He was sent home, but then put back in the hospital when the pain would not go away.

Fr. Joseph told me that he was by Fr. Bill’s side holding his hand when he passed. Brother Richard assured me that Fr. Bill passed very peacefully. The church was filled with all of Fr. Bill’s parishioners from St. Mary’s in Pompton Lake, NJ; Our Lady Queen of Peace in Hewett, NJ and St. Francis Xavier. If you want to know more about Fr. Bill, google William L. Scully, OFM and read about how he took his exams in Portuguese, Burmese, German and French. I really would like to thank everyone at Holy Name Friary for the great care they gave my buddy, everyone from Brother Richard to the aides who took care of him. He had a great-size room and his own TV and computer. Fr. Bill was so thankful for his great care, and he enjoyed the food.

A quote from Fr. Bill: “I’ve had a very enjoyable life. Keep on smiling. I love the people—that’s all that matters.” Wednesday night, when I was at the wake, I asked Fr. Joseph if he could please read the Irish blessing Fr. Bill said at the end of each mass, and preface the blessing by saying, “In the famous words of Fr. Bill...”

Here’s that blessing: “May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, and the rain fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again may God hold you in the palm of his hand.” Fr. Bill, you will always have a special place in my heart; may you rest in peace.

Keep smiling and have a great week. Email leenie beans@citlink.net or call 845/252-3568 if you have news. You can always check me out at riverreporter.com in Community Living.
