I write this column with a heavy heart, as my friend and former co-worker Nancy Simonet passed away recently. Nancy was married to her husband Jeffery for 54 years, and together they have three kids and seven grandkids.

Nancy and Jeff moved to Cochecton from New Jersey in the ‘90s, when they made it their home. I met Nancy sitting at the bar in Pete’s Pub, where we both wound up working. We enjoyed many a fun night, with Nancy and me on one side of the bar and our husbands on the other. Nancy was the type of person who would do anything to help someone—she was a hard worker and a fun person to be around. When it was slow at the bar—which was not that often—we all chipped in and cleaned. I remember we were asked to clean the glass on the windows that divided the back porch. The windows were similar to French doors with little squares. I hated cleaning them, as I always banged my knuckles. Not Nancy. She got right in there ‘til they shined. Nancy was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and helped out with the children. This past Sunday, the Pete’s Pub Crew—all 14 of us—got together at Matson’s Bar & Grill to have a drink in Nancy’s honor, sharing many laughs and good stories. Nancy, may you rest in peace. The family is planning on having a memorial in the spring.

The Cochecton Youth Club (CYC) spent December 8 in New York City to see the tree and watch the Rockettes perform at Radio City Music Hall. We had a great time, but the city was so crowded that I felt like I was going to be squashed just trying to cross the street. That took me almost 20 minutes. My little buddy Harper Ryder had to be picked up to cross—all that poor kid saw were backsides in her face. Thank you to all who came out and were part of this great trip, and thank you to Avery bus company for getting us there and back safely. Please follow the CYC on our Facebook page for upcoming events.

Save the date, January 1, for New Years chicken barbeque at the Lake Hunting Fire Co. from 2 to 5 p.m. To get your tickets in advance call 845/932-8514. Take out only.
