LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY — On Saturday, February 19, the Lady Generals of SUNY Sullivan (20-2) led off a double-header game of hoops that pitted the hometown teams against the Wolverines’ women’s and men’s basketball squads from Essex Community College.

At the start of the game, the Lady Wolverines (15-5) put a scare into the bleachers as they outgunned Sullivan 20-15, only to get outpaced 5-18 in the second frame, giving the Lady Generals a 33-25 lead at the half.

The visitors dominated the third period by outscoring Sullivan 19-10.

But in the last frame the Lady Generals outshot Essex 17-13, narrowly escaping the slavering jaws of defeat as they eked out a three-point victory at the final buzzer (60-57).

In the final period, at one point the score was tied 38-38. Later, with 1:08 remaining on the game clock, the score was tied 55-55, until some quick-thinking timeouts and success at the free-throw line saved the day.

SUNY Sullivan is coached by Ben Newberg, assisted by Carl Graham. The Lady Wolverines feature Anthony Green at the helm, assisted by Daisa Simmons and Waynon Brown.

Top scorers for the Lady Generals: Deivejon Harris (18 points), Barbara Bruno (10), Anisa Perry (10). Contributing three-pointers: Keyani Sidberry, Infinity Hammonds and Aniyah Hector.

Essex: Jakira Coar (23 points, including 5 three-pointers), Chloe Cassidy (10 points, including a three-pointer), Salma Abouelkher (10), and three-pointers by Mia Martinez and Ania Martinez.

Lady Generals vs. Lady Knights

With that win in their next-to-last game of the regular season, the Lady Generals took on the Lady Knights of Community College of Baltimore County—Essex (MD) on Sunday, February 20 “Down in the Bunker” at the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse, but fell to the third-ranked and undefeated NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) Division II team, 93-64, to wrap up the season 20-3.

Looking ahead, the Lady Generals, who nailed down the number-one seed, qualified for the NJCAA Region 15 basketball championship tournament. It will be held the weekend of February 26 and 27 at Westchester Community College, and the Lady Generals will take to the court on Sunday, February 27.

If they win, the team will advance to the NJCAA East District Championships in Niagara, NY, March 4 to 6.
