LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — The girls’ varsity soccer game between the home-team Sullivan West Lady Bulldogs (4-1-2 overall, 2-1 league) and the visiting Lady Eagles of John S. Burke Catholic High (3-2, 2-0) could be described as a night vs. day match. The two 40-minutes frames were almost direct opposites.

In the first frame, the visitors dominated the field of play, as a couple of eighth graders posted scores: Kathleen Conlon, assisted by Kiera Laurie @ 31:02; followed by Kate Cuebas, with 3:25 left in the half.

In the final frame, it was all Sullivan West in contrast to the opening 40 minutes. The team ruled the field, inflamed by the resident “Dawg Pound” up in the bleachers.

At the 8:37 mark, the Lady Bulldogs beat the Burke keeper in a play that energized both the squad and the hometown fans. Anna Bernas scored off an assist by Elizabeth Reeves, a play that created a moment of jubilation in front of the Burke goal, in spite of a strong defensive move by the Lady Eagles keeper.

Despite the valiant second-half comeback, Sullivan West missed the brass ring; the Lady Eagles won 2-1.

The keepers were Elaine Herbert for Sullivan West (15 saves), and Madeline Coley for Burke (11 saves).

These short stats were compiled by Sullivan West’s Kurt Scheibe:

Corners—SW 4, Burke 6

The 2022 Sullivan West girls’ varsity squad fields nine seniors: Felicity Baurenfeind, Anna Bernas (captain), Georgeanne Cardona, Kaylee DiBiase, Brianna Haass, Serena Harding, Elaine Herbert (captain), Lucia Kennedy and Paige Muzuruk.

“Going forward, we want to keep up the intensity, taking as many shots as we can, and play as a unit,” said Megan Brockner, coach of the Lady Bulldogs’ girls’ booters.

Sara Fandl is at the helm of Burke’s girls’ varsity squad, and noted the team is made up of five upperclassmen: Rose Conlon, Anya Kelly, Amanda Kruegel, Julia Pieczara and Kathryn Scully (captain).

Her goals and aspirations for the season?

“We have a lot of talent, and pieces we haven’t had in a while coming together,” she said. “We have to come together a little faster.”

And her take on the match?

“This was a good game, [but] that shift at halftime killed us,” said Coach Fandl, noting that the resident “Dawg Pound” really added a bit of howling zest to the game.
