HONESDALE, PA — The Lackawaxen Food Hub’s weekly farm share, a community-supported agriculture (CSA) program that offered subscriptions for boxes of locally grown produce, meat and eggs, will close this month. 
The hub’s CSA began roughly two years ago, taking over from the Lackawaxen Farm Company, but has struggled monetarily, according to a letter from the board of directors. The CSA will continue through March 13 and 14, and the bulk store will be open online March 18.  

“This decision has not been made lightly or without exhausting all conceivable efforts to make the food hub financially sustainable,” the letter reads. The hub worked with more than 40 regional farms and food producers to fill not only its weekly CSA share boxes, but to also keep its online bulk store stocked. 

Members of the organization will spend the next year reaching out to community partners, local nonprofit and governmental agencies, as well as farms, restaurants and community members, to create a new model food aggregator in the community, according to the board. Additionally, a nonprofit organization that sprung from the food hub, The Lackawaxen Food & Farm Initiative, will continue to hold farmer meet-up sessions and host community food education programs.

In the upcoming year, the board will reach out to community partners, local nonprofit and government agencies, farms, restaurants and community members dedicated to supporting local food to formulate a financially sustainable plan to implement a model for a food aggregator in our community. 

“The efforts to keep our small farms alive in our region are far from over,” the directors wrote. “We continue to be optimistic about the energy that is surrounding agriculture in our region right now, and are confident that this community will come together around the idea that together we can work smarter, not harder, to connect our farmers with consumers.”
