June 18 Lake Huntington swimming ban

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — The Lake Huntington Lake Association (LHLA) has arranged for June 18 treatment of the lake’s algae overgrowth, using the product SeClear. SeClear’s manufacturer, SePRO Corporation, claims that SeClear is the first all-in-one aquatic algaecide and water quality enhancer designed to replace routine algaecide treatments. It is used to control scum or toxic cyanobacteria in ponds, lakes and reservoirs.

The announcement was made at the June 10 Cochecton Town Board meeting by councilman Paul Salzberg, who said swimming in the lake will be banned for 24 hours after application, but noted that the product has been approved by the DEC.

Councilman Sean Nearing asked if manufacturer’s safety recommendations were included in the product packaging, as required by law. Salzberg said, “yes.” Stating that control will occur in three to seven days following application, SePRO Corporation advises that water bodies should be treated again when regrowth appears.

Salzberg said the treatment will be complemented with runoff prevention measures, such as silt fences between the water and lakeside construction projects.

The LHLA is holding a raffle to fund the treatment. Though Salzberg didn’t know what prizes are being offered this year, last year’s grand prize was a kayak, and this year’s will be something of comparable value.

In other business, supervisor Gary Maas announced that the bridge spanning the Delaware between Cochecton and Damascus is currently scheduled for a two-year rehabilitation beginning in 2021. The bridge will remain open during the project, with one lane of the two-lane bridge closed in 2021, the other in 2022. At project completion, the bridge will be able to support delivery trucks from nearby Cochecton Mills, as well as ambulances, firetrucks, bulk milk container trucks and fuel oil delivery trucks.

Here are some notable dates: Litter Pluck is throughout the month of June. Bags are available at town hall. New York State primaries will happen on Tuesday, June 23. Cochecton Town Hall will be the polling place for the towns of Callicoon and Cochecton. Disposal of bulk household items at Cochecton Town Hall will take place Saturday and Sunday, August 15 and 16.

The next regular meeting of the board on Wednesday, July 8 may be the first “open” live meeting since the pandemic shutdown began in March. Since then, all meetings have been “closed” live meetings with only board members, the town clerk and media representatives present to keep gatherings within the 10-person maximum allowed by pandemic decree.
