Since mobile phones are woven into everyday life, and come packed with features, why not make the most of it when you get outdoors? There’s an app for just about everything under the sun (or moon), and quality varies. Here are some apps that are either free or inexpensive.

A great addition to the iPhone, this app takes amazing photos and allows adjustment of exposure and focus as you shoot and a plethora of simple yet effective tools to edit the photos with after. Use the Stabilizer to steady your iPhone and get the sharpest photos you can. 

There is a free version of this app which does not have as many bells and whistles

Sky Guide

A 2014 design-winning app, Sky Guide really helps you figure out what that light in the sky is. Simply hold your phone overhead and Sky Guide automatically adjusts to your viewing direction so you can easily identify stars, planets, constellations and more. It even has a night vision adjustment so the light from your phone doesn’t mess with your sight.

HuntFishNY is the official New York State Department of Environmental Conservation app. Simple, user-friendly way to display your sporting license and/or privileges as well as a method to report the harvest of a deer, bear or a turkey immediately while afield. It also comes loaded with other features. The only catch is registering (which needs a ton of personal information) and logging in (which can be spotty at times).

FishBoatPA is the official app from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Access to fishing and boating regulations, “near-me” mapping feature for locating boating access points, stocked trout streams and lakes, and where to purchase fishing licenses, trout-stocking information, fish identification tool, trophy case for logging and sharing your catches with friends.

This weather app has a ton of options with accurate sunrise, sunsets, wind, precipitation, radar and lots more. It’s presented in either charts and listings, or clean-looking graphs. You can set and tag multiple locations and even change the location where the forecast comes from.
