Positive COVID-19 case, possible exposures at Liberty Diner

Posted

LIBERTY, NY — Sullivan County Public Health Services has confirmed that a patron at the Liberty Diner tested positive for COVID-19 and may have exposed others while visiting during their infectious period.

Public Health Services is advising anyone who was at the diner, located at 30 Sullivan Avenue in Liberty, during the following dates and times that they may have been exposed to coronavirus:

  • November 21 from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.
  • November 22 from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.
  • November 23 from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.
  • November 24 from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.
  • November 25 from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.

“The restaurant has been and is following appropriate coronavirus protocols, including frequent sanitizing, distancing of tables, dividers between tables, and mask-wearing of staff as well as customers when entering and leaving the diner. However, due to the need to remove masks to consume food, it is possible that others may have been exposed,” said Sullivan County Public Health Director Nancy McGraw. “If someone thinks they have been exposed and develops symptoms, they should self-quarantine for 14 days and call their healthcare provider, or call Sullivan County Public Health Services at 845/292-5910.”

The virus that causes COVID-19 most commonly spreads between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet, or 2 arm-lengths). It spreads through respiratory droplets or small particles, such as those in aerosols, produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, sings, talks, or breathes. These particles can be inhaled into the nose, mouth, airways, and lungs and cause infection. This is thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

COVID-19 seems to be spreading easily and sustainably throughout communities in many affected geographic areas of the county. Community spread means people have been infected with the virus in an area, including some who are not sure how or where they became infected. (CDC, Nov. 2020).

Contact investigations are ongoing; anyone who tests positive will go into mandatory isolation, and as close contacts are identified, they are encouraged to seek a test and ordered into mandatory quarantine. For an updated list of testing locations, visit www.sullivanny.us.

Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. Possible symptoms of COVID-19 include one or more of the following:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

If someone is showing any of these signs, seek emergency medical care immediately:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
  • New confusion
  • Inability to wake or stay awake
  • Bluish lips or face
