LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — Well, if it’s good enough for Roger, it’s good enough for me.

Over the past few weeks, this sports scribbler has been getting his sports fix by occasionally tuning into the major networks to watch, however briefly, football championships and soccer matches from several years ago; the networks have been airing games from as far back as the 1993 Super Bowl and games of hoops long gone from the court.

So, hats off to Roger Goodell, commissioner of the big-dog NFL and the folks in charge of big-league basketball in the Age of Zoom.

In this time of the world-wide COVID-19 pandemic, sports of all sorts are in limbo: the Summer Olympics have been postponed until 2021, professional sports are on indefinite hold and scholar-athletes are cooling their heels until they get the signal that the threat of the coronavirus has passed.

In an effort to keep the spirit of local high school sports alive, the River Reporter is presenting a series of retrospective flashbacks from recent events, including a couple of games from the 2019 season of swats.

On April 2, 2019, the Sullivan West Bulldogs squared off against the Yellowjackets of Eldred. Coverage of this varsity game was published in story titled “Two teams, two big innings.”

A few days later, on April 10, 2019, it was the girl’s turn at bat, as both local rivals met once again, and was covered in a story labeled “Blame the weatherman.”

This series of reviews focuses on previously unpublished photos from the events, so in a sense, in the words of Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra, “It’s déjà vu all over again.”

And in the words of Jim McKay, long-time host of ABC’s Wide World of Sports, a chance to relive “The constant variety of sports… the thrill of victory… the agony of defeat… the human drama of athletic competition.”
