LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — In this time of the world-wide COVID-19 pandemic, sports of all sorts are in limbo: the Summer Olympics have been postponed until 2021, professional sports are on indefinite hold and scholar-athletes are cooling their heels until they get the signal that the threat of the coronavirus has passed.

In an effort to keep the spirit of local high school sports alive, The River Reporter is presenting a series of retrospective flashbacks from recent events, including a couple of games from last year’s season of hoops at Sullivan West.

On Friday, December 20, 2019, the Bulldogs took on Chester Academy; On Friday, February 21, the Lady Bulldogs hosted Burke Catholic.

The boys’ game, titled “Fundamentals: the foundation of success” was published on Thursday, January 2. The girls’ game was published under the title “A bittersweet moment in time” on Thursday, February 27.

This version focuses on previously unpublished photos from the event, so in a sense, in the words of Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra, “It’s déjà vu all over again.”

And in the words of Jim McKay, long-time host of ABC’s Wide World of Sports, a chance to relive “the constant variety of sports… the thrill of victory… the agony of defeat… the human drama of athletic competition.”
