HONESDALE, PA — In this time of the world-wide COVID-19 pandemic, sports of all sorts are in limbo: the Summer Olympics have been postponed until 2021, professional sports are on indefinite hold and scholar athletes are cooling their heels until they get the signal that the threat of the coronavirus has passed.

In an effort to keep the spirit of local high school sports alive, The River Reporter is presenting a series of retrospective flashbacks from recent events, including the January 27 dual wrestling meet at Honesdale High School against Blue Ridge and the Wildcats of Western Wayne. (The Hornets defeated the Red Raiders 66-12 and the Wildcats 54-24)

The stories titled “Hornets pin Red Raiders 66-12” and “Honesdale Matmen top Wildcats” were originally published Thursday, February 6.

This version focuses on previously unpublished photos from the event, so in a sense, in the words of Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra, “It’s déjà vu all over again.”

And in the words of Jim McKay, long-time host of ABC’s Wide World of Sports, a chance to relive “the constant variety of sports… the thrill of victory… the agony of defeat… the human drama of athletic competition.”
