ELDRED, NY — June’s town board meeting brought the first post-holiday opportunity for Highland Supervisor Jeff Haas to laud the varied volunteer efforts in preparation for Memorial Day, the introduction of the town’s Woodstock anniversary dove sculpture and the new Barryville Farmers Market.

The dove, which has been under wraps for a month, is likely unique in its three-dimensional image. Highland artist Catherine Four painted stars and stripes on the top and bottom of the three-dimensional dove, separate from the colorful designs on either side. “Ours is one of the nice ones in the county, I believe,” Haas said.

Two street lamps were restored by Churchill Motors and the Springhouse Garage provided clear-coat finishing for the lamps as well as the dove. Town workers replaced some 600 paver stones in the Eagle Park pedestrian surface, and added new lighting to compliment Carol Sundholm’s floral design work.

Brightening the summer season, volunteering board members erected 42 pole banners around Highland, celebrating both Woodstock and the Barryville area arts community, along with the new Barryville Farmers’ Market, which opened on Saturday of the holiday weekend. “Everything was beautiful… I want to thank everyone for their efforts. The ‘dove reveal’ and Memorial Day services were both well attended,” he said.

In other business, the town-planning board’s meeting night was changed to the fourth Wednesday of the month. In order to expedite projects, the board authorized a resolution exempting Highland from 239 county planning reviews on projects not involving state or federal properties.
