LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — It started out on a high note, but then things began to unravel for the home team.

On Monday, January 6, the Sullivan West Lady Bulldogs (1-6) hoopsters took on the visiting Lady Hambletonians of Chester Academy (3-2) in a non-league girls’ varsity basketball game.

Sullivan West’s Keri Burr thrilled the home-stand fans as she drew first blood with a bucket on the opening tip-off, but then the game headed southward. By the 5:12 mark in the first frame, the Lady Hambletonians were ahead 11-2.

Chester closed out the outset period 18-5, but in following frame, the Lady Bulldogs staged a short-lived comeback, outscoring their opponents 14-11.

In the final analysis, the first frame ruled the day for Chester, setting up a 10-point lead (29-19) at the half.

The Lady Hambletonians edged the home team in the final two frames (11-10, 11-8) to post a 51-37 win in the scorebook.

Sullivan West’s top scorers: Brielle Arnott (14 points, including four 3-pointers), Riley Ernst (12), Grace Boyd with a 3-pointer.

Chester: Allison Bono (16 points including a 3-pointer), Cynthia Castro (15), Rasleen Ghuliani (11 points including three 3-pointers).

Stats from the free throw line: Sullivan West 4/10 (40%), Chester 3/17 (18%).

A highlight of the game was Sullivan West mathematics instructor Amy Hellerner and her 7-year-old daughter Allie, a second grader at the elementary school, staffing the PTSO table and doing a brisk business selling items to benefit the school’s various parent-teacher-student organization programs.
