GLEN SPEY — The town honored two outgoing Lumberland officials on December 11, Town Justice William H. McKerrell Jr. and Councilman Joe Carr.

McKerrell, who served for 34 years after his appointment on January 1, 1986, was a longtime member of both the Sullivan County and New York State Magistrates Association, and as a small business owner in the community was credited for using his business’s resources to provide hundreds of hours of service during the creation of Circle Park. McKerrell was unable to attend.

Craig W. Cherry was elected in November to take McKerrell’s seat on the bench.

Carr, a resident since 1997, has served as a councilman for 18 years, and in addition to an extensive record of volunteer community service including in part the preparation of meals at Circle Park, “for hordes of hungry workers every weekend for years,” he was the founder of the Lumberland’s Independence Day Parade and a member of the Town of Lumberland Bicentennial Committee, Lumberland Seniors, Highland Seniors, and the Lumberland Fire Department Auxiliary. He also worked with the Board of Elections bringing in and setting up voting machines, helping election days run smoothly.

Carr has received awards from the Sullivan County Legislature, the NYS Assembly, the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce and Congressional Recognition for outstanding and invaluable service to the community.

The final line of the board’s proclamation read: “Whereas Joseph Carr has selflessly volunteered and acted as a role model for good citizenry for all the years he has lived in the Town of Lumberland…do hereby proclaim that the Town of Lumberland recognizes Joseph Carr for his service and dedication to the Town of Lumberland.”

Carr thanked his board colleagues, town staff, the constables and fire department. He often spoke of his indebtedness to the Lumberland Fire Department, for their lifesaving efforts during a critical illness, and he recalled it again. “I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them.”

Karen M. Warden was elected in November to fill Carr’s seat on the town board.

In other business, the board approved an $11,150 expenditure for auditing services; approved the collective four-year bargaining agreement for highway department workers providing a 2.5% wage increase annually over the contract period; created a $4,000 reserve fund for town parks and recreation; and named David Hook as the county fire advisory board delegate
