With school finally out of session and the June Solstice in the rearview, it is officially summer here in Honesdale. There are so many things happening in and around our little town to fill these long and gloriously sunny days and evenings (when is it not raining, of course).

First, if you do not know about the Kids Lunch Party at The Cooperage Project, I must fill you in. Every Monday through Friday from now until August 6, any child age 0 to 18 can receive a free lunch from 11 to 1 p.m. No income requirements and no questions asked, just a free and nutritious meal! The Kids Lunch Party is a collaboration between The Cooperage and Wayne Highlands School District and is made possible through grant funding, community volunteers and organizations who donate their time and products. Come check it out! Mom and Dad can pack a lunch or stop into Alley Whey next door for a slice of pizza.

There are a wide array of excitingly different events leading up to July 4th celebrations, starting with Mick’s Buzz Off for Cancer on Saturday, June 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Mick’s Barber Shop. Proceeds benefit the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute, so all money raised stays local to help ease the burden for cancer patients in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Ask family and friends to make a donation in exchange for your promise to have your hair buzzed. Can’t brave the buzz? Sponsor a “buzzee” or simply make a general donation! A minimum donation to have your head buzzed is $35 and includes a free T-shirt, while supplies last.

Head out to the farms this weekend for Pizza Night on Friday, June 28 at Old School Farm featuring Jason Brian Merrill. On Saturday, June 29, join The Cooperage Project as it takes its educational programming and entertainment to Second District Vineyard and Hop Farm from 3 to 7 p.m. As part of a family friendly monthly installment dubbed “At the Farm,” this Saturday’s event includes a workshop on bald eagles by the National Park Service, beer from Second District Brewing (Philadelphia), delicious food from The Mustard Seed and live music by Jung Bergo.

Summertime doesn’t have to put a pause on your learning endeavors. There are plenty of unique workshops coming up to put your brain to use and learn new skills, like building a solar -power charging-station for your cell phone. Do you know how to build one? Come see the process at The Stourbridge Project on Monday, July 8 from 4 to 7 p.m. Want to touch up your embroidery techniques or learn some new tricks? Every other Thursday upstairs at The Cooperage Project, join Devan George with your embroidery projects, ask any embroidery questions and chat with other stitchers. Plus, a new skill will be taught each week. Upcoming nights are June 27 and July 11 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Don’t forget, the deadline to submit to The Tapestry is July 15. The Tapestry is an ambitious project from The Cooperage Project which aims to create a visual tapestry from photos submitted by members of our community. All photos submitted will be a part of an installation at The Cooperage Project in the fall of 2019. Further, a juried committee will select 50 to 60 photos for a coffee table book, which will be sold as a fundraiser benefiting The Cooperage Project and its future programming. Want to hone your photography skills so you can submit your finest work to The Tapestry? Join expert photographers on Saturday, July 13 at The Stourbridge Project to learn the core concepts of photography and receive practical tips.
Finally, if you want your socks blown off, I highly suggest you check out one of my favorite local band of youngsters, Brotality, as they perform your favorite metal and rock songs to perfection on Saturday, July 6 in Honesdale’s Central Park from 6 to 8 p.m. I promise, you will thank me.
