Downtown melts

As ice melts, puddles spread and snow falls yet again, breaks of clear sky highlight oases of color. A few landscape nooks have been brickcanvas-activated recently. Last year, two murals made a fall debut. One can be seen when travelling downstream in Main Street’s traffic flow. The other is tucked away and visible when looking upstream. Both are within a block of each other and worth seeking out while strolling H’dale.

At the southern end of downtown lives the Great Wall of Honesdale: an outdoor art exhibition of the Wayne County Arts Alliance, featuring a yearly-rotating display of creative works by local artists. It’s noticeable from a distance and can be enjoyed up close, as a series of murals, generously sharing their home and providing an inspired backdrop to CVS, so rich in value that the wall’s founders should probably receive stock in the company.

The Great Wall project is community funded, has a great new pair of stewards, and the newest mural cycle emerges this summer. To learn more and join in on the effort, visit www.thegreatwallofhonesdale.com/support.

Since it’s puddle season, you may find yourself roaming the streets, looking for a cozy, dry spot to hang out and create in. If so, visit the Bodhi Tree Art Studio. The crew there is a welcoming, creative bunch. They help make Star Trek creatures, host workshops, hold costumed dance parties, feature Second Saturday exhibits and have open studio sessions on Wednesday evenings. Not to mention, they have the most magical, Instagrammable bathroom in all of Honesdale. No joke.

If The River Reporter had a best bathroom award, Bodhi Tree would have the resultant certificate. This is a deep, local landscape feature people aren’t talking about, presumably because it’s a bathroom but, whatever, I’m* not afraid to discuss such matters.

And speaking of esoterica, gift certificate design is often underappreciated. You’re free to appreciate in full, however, at Main Street’s new nail salon neighbor, Bottles and Brushes.

This refreshingly appointed space features an assortment of wonder in both services and interior design. When the time comes to find a gift for your loved ones, consider yourself warned. Your bi-weekly columnist from the island realm of Honesdale almost kept a gift certificate ungifted. Why? To selfishly redirect massage chair time for oneself? Nope. Instead, to frame and hang the gift certificate as a stand-alone article. And this holds true meaning, because the massage chairs at this place are preternaturally rewarding.
