Honesdale honors its fallen

HONESDALE, PA — Honesdale’s Memorial Day parade stepped off on a beautiful Monday morning, May 30, at 10 a.m.under a bright blue sky with temperatures in the 70s.

This year’s grand marshals included Clarence Meyer, Ray Rutledge and Amos Rutledge, all Damascus graduates who enlisted together and returned to their communities upon completing their service.

Main Street was lined with spectators. The parade headed north on Main Street from the intersection with 5th Street up to 9th Street, where the route turned, heading to Central Park. This route is a shortened version of parades past, adopted due to compliance with COVID-19 regulations last year.

The old route had continued up Main Street and across the bridge over the Lackawaxen River, ending at Triangle Park on North Main Street. The parade committee would have liked to revert to the previous longer route; however, according to Jessica Pachuta, parade chairman, new regulations requiring certified traffic flaggers at each intersection would require 36 people. The shorter route, also used by the Jaycees’ Halloween Parade and other holiday marches, requires only 12. The cost of additional flaggers would have amounted to several thousand dollars, an expense Pachuta would rather see donated directly to the VFW.

She suggested that those willing to donate their time to reach out and become certified parade flaggers for this and other parades in the area should send an email to honesdaleparade@gmail.com

The Memorial Day parade and ceremonies are sponsored and planned by the Honesdale VFW, Wayne County Department of Veterans Affairs and the America Legion in remembrance of those who have died in service to our country.
