Over the Delaware River and through the woods, to Grandmother’s house we go. A nice lyric. A lovely cliché. Yet it’s not always the case. Not everyone has family with whom to spend the holidays. Nor does everyone have enough food.
We are fortunate to live in a community that balances giving with thanks during the Thanksgiving and winter holiday seasons. No one needs to be alone or go hungry on Thanksgiving this year.
Those hoping to get a little social in Tusten are invited to attend a free Thanksgiving lunch sponsored by the Blue Fox Motel, 5670 State Route 97, Narrowsburg, NY, and by Tusten Social. The event, on Thursday, November 28, runs from 12 noon to 3 p.m. It features food by Chef Bruno Carvalho, and reservations are recommended by emailing hello@tustensocial.org. Space for this free event is limited. Best to reserve by Monday, November 25 if possible.
“We are delighted to partner with The Blue Fox to create a friendly and delicious experience this Thanksgiving, particularly for those who otherwise might find themselves alone during the holiday,” said Greta Knutzen, co-founder, Tusten Social.
“A strong community is built around shared experiences, and there’s no better way to connect than over a table filled with great food. We are delighted to provide a space where everyone can convene, enjoy themselves and give thanks,” said Meg Sullivan, co-owner, Blue Fox Motel.
Attendees can purchase gift cards in $5 and $10 denominations at the door, with all proceeds benefiting local families in need through the Narrowsburg Ecumenical Food Pantry’s Holiday Gift Drive.
In addition to the Blue Fox event, those wishing to support the food pantry can also donate while checking out at Pete’s Grocery Store, 120 Kirks Road, Narrowsburg.
To meet the holiday goals, the Ecumenical Food Pantry must raise $5,000 by Sunday, December 15. Those wanting to donate online should visit www.cfosny.org.
The Ecumenical Food Pantry in Narrowsburg provides food for those families in need living within a 10-mile radius of the pantry. Narrowsburg is in western Sullivan County, which has the highest rate of poverty in the Hudson Valley and a food insecurity rate of 10.7 percent. Over 50 registered families receive a monthly allotment of canned and dry foods from the pantry, as well as weekly access to donated foods.
In addition, there are thrice-yearly holiday giving events.
The pantry is open every Thursday from 4.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. To access services, please visit the church hall at the back of St Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 151 Bridge St., Narrowsburg.
Food donations can be dropped off at the Ecumenical Food Pantry or at Pete’s Market in Narrowsburg.
Happy Thanksgiving to all.
