HERSHEY, PA — Wayne County resident Dave Williams was presented with the Barn Raiser Award at the PA Farm Bureau annual meeting in Hershey.
The Barn Raiser Award has only been given out 14 times in 71 years, according to a news release from the Wayne Pike Farm Bureau. “It recognizes individuals who have devoted a lifetime of exemplary service advocating for PA agriculture. Through his local radio show, his programs on RFD-TV and his newest affiliation with the PCN television network, Dave has spent 20 years telling the story of agriculture and introducing us to the people who live it day in and day out.”
The Wayne/Pike Farm Bureau applauded Williams’ achievement and, the release said, they were grateful for his dedicated leadership in the agricultural community.
HONESDALE, PA — Boy Scout Troop 1 in Honesdale received a $900 grant from the Wayne Highlands Education Association (WHEA) in November.
The grant was part of the WHEA Community Outreach program.
The troop has been continually active since 1911 and is a member of the Northeast PA Council in the Dan Beard district of the Boy Scouts of America. It has one of the largest troops in the council, according to a news release, and has produced over 76 Eagle Scouts. Scouts from Troop 1 maintain a year-round program and in recent years have traveled to many places including high adventure bases in New Mexico, Florida, Minnesota and Canada; national jamborees and an annual 16-mile hike to Goose Pond Scout Reservation in Hamlin for summer camp.
The troop has coordinated or assisted other organizations with park and river clean-ups, conservation projects. It has aided other organizations, such as the Jaycees and many others, with projects or community service.
HONESDALE, PA — Want to keep walking but know that cold and ice get old fast?
Wayne Memorial Hospital is partnering with local school districts to provide indoor, heated, secure and well-lit places for residents to take an evening walk.
The program lasts six months, from now through May 26, 2022, weeknights Monday through Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The hallways are open for walkers when school is in session, unless canceled for weather or other reasons.
You can walk at the following schools: Forest City Regional High School; Damascus, Lakeside and Preston Elementary Schools; Newfoundland Elementary and Wallenpaupack High School; Evergreen and R.D. Wilson Elementary Schools, and Western Wayne Middle/High School.
An ID badge is required and costs $5; liability waivers and questionnaires need to be filled out and signed. Walkers must log in and out for security reasons, and masks must be worn until further notice.

MILFORD, PA ― Last year, a partnership with Subaru World raised over $3,000 for area seniors.
Share the Love is back for a second year in Pike County.
The program works like this: during the holiday season, for every new vehicle purchased or leased, Subaru will donate $250 to one of four national or 1,440 local charities, including the Pike County Area Agency on Aging (AAA).
This year’s event ends on January 3, 2022.
The AAA runs the Meals on Wheels program, which delivers nutritious meals to eligible senior citizens; about 1,000 meals are delivered weekly. Drivers also check on the seniors.

NARROWSBURG, NY — Three committee meetings for the Upper Delaware Council (UDC) are set for Tuesday, December 14 on a revised holiday schedule.
The Project Review Committee will begin at 6:30 p.m. and include the UDC Resource Specialist’s monthly discussion items report, technical assistance grants (TAG) program administrative updates and old and new business.
The operations committee will convene at 7 p.m. and include reports of staff activities, review of financial data and discussion of old and new business.
The water use and resource management committee will meet at 7:30 p.m. and will include notices of upcoming meetings and updates on water use and resource management issues with potential impacts on the river valley.

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Rep. Antonio Delgado (NY-19) recently announced his Holiday Cards for Heroes program. Residents of New York’s 19th Congressional District are invited to create holiday cards for active-duty service members and health care workers. Congressman Delgado’s office will share the holiday greetings with those who have worked hard to keep everyone safe this year. Cards will be accepted through Wednesday, December 15.
Holiday cards should be placed in an unsealed envelope, addressed to the congressman’s Kingston office, 256 Clinton Ave., Kingston, NY 12401.
This is the third year Rep. Delgado’s office has conducted the program.

MILFORD, PA — This fall, the Milford Lions Club held its first annual Fall Classic MS walk, 5K run and bike ride.
Karen Demaio was the overall winner in the 5K run and Marian and James Harrison were the winners in the bike ride.

MONTICELLO, NY — Their hard work paid off: Monticello High School students amassed enough donations to feed 100 families this Thanksgiving.That’s 100 fewer hungry families at Thanksgiving.
With the help of Julian Dawson at the United Way, students and staff collected enough donations to fund a big shopping trip at the Monticello ShopRite. Then they took their purchases to the Ted Stroebel Community Center to get the baskets ready for Monticello families in need.
In accordance with tradition, the top four winning homerooms received a coveted box of Blowpops. The top first period class had breakfast prepared for them by Robyn Boardman and Anna Marissa Estep, assistant principals, and Stephen Wilder, the principal. The final tally revealed that the first period classes of coaches Ryan Jasper and Emily Woudenberg donated a total of $1,491.13, making them the winners.
HONESDALE, PA — For over 40 years, the Wayne YMCA has offered programs to people of all ages throughout the county. The group focuses on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
Now they have received an $11,000 grant from the John and Helen Villaume Foundation, which will go toward improving their heating system.
The Villaume Foundation Villaume was created to benefit charitable, religious, scientific, literary and educational programs within Wayne County. Since its inception, the Foundation has made awards totaling over $2 million, with the Wayne Bank managing the account in its Wealth Management and Trust Services Division.

HAWLEY, PA — It was classic fall weather—a little cool, but with blue skies and sunshine—perfect for the participants in the recent 10th annual Run-To-Read foot race, sponsored by the Hawley Public Library.
Held in Hawley’s Bingham Park, the route took the 78 runners and walkers to downtown Hawley, then along the levee beside the Lackawaxen River to the Eddy, up Oakland Street, around Green Gates Cemetery, and finally back along the beginning route to the finish line in the park.
“It was wonderful to see so many enthusiastic participants, especially since we were unable to have the event in 2020, due to Covid,” said Susie George, library board president and chair of the event.
The first runner to cross the finish line was Tiffany Leventhal. who earned the title Overall Female Runner, with a time of 21:32. The second finisher and the first Overall Male Runner was Walter Pittenger, with a time of 22:34.

ALBANY, NY — Funds are available for eligible school districts to support the growth of farm-to-school programs across New York State.
State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball recently announced that $1.5 million is allocated for the programs, which help schools connect with local farmers to increase the use of locally grown food on school menus and improve student health, while providing increased economic benefits to New York’s farmers.
Applicants eligible for Round 6 of the program include kindergarten through grade 12 school food authorities, public schools, charter schools, not-for-profit schools and other entities participating in the National School Lunch Program, the School Breakfast Program, or the Summer Food Service Program. Not-for-profit entities working with school food authorities and eligible schools can also apply and projects that partner with producers and food processors are encouraged to do so as well.
Grant funding of up to $100,000 per project will be awarded for proposals including, but not limited to:
Up to $500,000 of the funds will be earmarked for applicants that have not received a farm-to-school award in previous rounds.
All applicants to Round 6 of the Farm-to-School Program must register and apply through Grants Gateway. Proposals must be received by December 30 by 4 pm.
